The 2004 Honky Tonk Tailgate Party featuring Rhett Atkins, Chad Brock, David Kersh and Daryle Singletary makes a pit stop at the Wilmington Airport for two hours of honky-tonk style country on Saturday.
You may catch Rhett Atkins' That Ain't My Truck, Don't Get Me Started and I Brake for Brunettes; Chad Brock's Ordinary Life and Yes; David Kersh's Goodnight Sweetheart and If I Never Stop Loving You; and Daryle Singletary's Too Much Fun, I Let Her Lie and Amen Kind of Love.
Mr. Singletary spoke with Currents from his Nashville home about the fourth annual Honky Tonk tour.
What can people expect from this show?
What we do is we come on each individually, do about 30 minutes, and at the end of the show we come back together. It just depends on the crowd, how long we play. We've been known to play 30, 45 minutes at the end of the show. If the crowd's wild and crazy there's no telling how long we'll play. But yes, we do come back at the end and play together. That's probably the most fun time in the whole evening is when we all get back out there together 'cause it's a free-for-all – we just have a big party!
Is it like traveling with your friends?
I guess. We're all road buddies. Myself and Rhett go hunting every once in a while when we're home. Chad is a contractor back here in Nashville; he's fixin' to build me a new house. So, we kinda got our own things goin' on when we do get home. But we're definitely road buddies. We have to kinda get along. We ride on one bus, us and the band. There's about 14, so it's kinda tight, but we have a good time.
All on one bus? How does that work?
Very carefully (laughs). It's neat. Sometimes it gets a little tight, but most of the time we spend riding at night so most of us are sleeping. Then when we get up in the day we have a hotel to go to, and then, you know, we're in and out of the bus at the gigs. It's not that bad.
What's the most fun thing to do while you're on tour?
You know what man, gosh, what is there fun to do? Really, there's not much to do when we're out there. It's kinda like we pull into town, we go to the hotel, we go to sound check and there's not much to do unless it's in advance. Most of the time we find out at the show that night: You coulda skied, you coulda come roped, you coulda did this and done that. We're like, 'Why didn't you call me, we've been sittin' at the hotel all day?' We all have different things we do. David and Rhett are big bow hunters. I do some huntin', but I do small game hunting, bird hunting and some skeet shooting. Don't play much golf anymore, so that narrows it down to what we can do on the road. But, it's still fun. Everything we do out there is fun, if it ain't nothing but sitting around watching a movie.
